Colour inspiration for timber doors
We are currently busy working with one of our housing associations clients undertaking planned external decorating works to a range of properties throughout the South West.
Our carpenters have been on site giving the timber windows and doors some well overdue TLC and the decorators have been using an array of colour for the timber door finishes.
The work we conducted included splice repairs to door frames, replacement weather boards and replacement timber cills. The timber work for each of the doors and windows included rubbing down, primer, undercoated and glossed which gave all the doors and windows a fresh, clean appearance.
So how do you choose the right colour for your front door?
According to Dulux, “your front door is the first introduction to your home, so it’s important not only to make a statement, but also create a welcoming entrance for you, your family and your guests.”
They recommend these top four tips to make sure you get it right…
1. Think about the style of your house. Is it contemporary or more traditional? Victorian-era homes with solid doors tend to suit classic colours like mahogany, navy blue and cream, whereas modern homes look fabulous with a front door dressed in royal blue, glossy red or charcoal. If your home is traditional or country-style, try nature-inspired shades such as forest green, sunny yellow and berry reds.
2. Look at the front of your home and consider which colours are already there. You should try and avoid clashing the front door with existing brickwork or tiling. You may even want to consider painting existing window frames or woodwork the same colour as the door to tie things together.
3. The colour you choose should complement the style of your home and reflect your own personality – but this doesn’t mean you can’t be bold and splash out with bright colours. After all, if you don’t like the results, your front door is easy to repaint.
4, If you’re still having trouble deciding which colour to pick, take a photograph of your home and, using a scalpel or sharp knife, carefully cut the front door out of the picture. Slide a paint swatch or tester of your chosen colour underneath the picture, where the door should be. This will help you see how each colour works in the overall scheme of your home – and gives you the opportunity to play around with colour.
